Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) March Break Camp 2016

With spring in the air, March is always an exciting time for youth at Culturelink. And so, CultureLink’s SWIS team sprung into action to put together yet another successful March Break Camp!

Twenty-six youth from six different high schools, each speaking different languages and from cultures, participated in the 4th annual March Break Camp for SWIS. For three days between March 15 and 17th youth made friends in an environment of learning through group games, exercises and experiences.

The youth learned about leadership concepts and skills, team building and creativity through fun activities like the ‘egg drop’ that encouraged participants to interact with each other and make friends which bolstered their confidence. The ice-breakers including zumba dance and musical arms added more fun in-between learning new knowledge and skills. A trip to the Royal Ontario Museum, a first for all participants except one, was an experience to remember for everyone. And last but not least, the photo rally activity that saw the youth out and about in the city was yet another exciting day with a competitive edge. Teams visited numerous historically importance throughout downtown and returned with speed to Culturelink to  receive prizes. A theatre workshop led by Rehaset Yohanes involved the youth in sharing aspects about themselves through dramatic-play.

Culturelink was able to provide the youth with breakfast/snacks and lunch each day and resources from P4K grants helped a lot. Students received TTC and tickets to the ROM. Certificates of participation were given to all youth on the final day of Camp.
