CultureLink to participate in “Camp Suzuki in the Rouge”

A CultureLink team has been selected to participate in a special program called “Camp Suzuki in the Rouge”, offered by the David Suzuki Foundation!

This program will support a Bike Host and Newcomer Youth campout in the Rouge Park this summer. We’ll be able to create a fantastic opportunity for newcomer participants and community volunteers to experience the forest, fields and farmlands of the Rouge, a wilderness gem in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area. We’ll be contributing to the goal of establishing the Rouge as Canada’s first urban National Park. Last but not least, the program will provide invaluable networking and promotional opportunities for CultureLink.

The CultureLink team is composed of reps from the cycling program, the Community Connections Mentorship Program, and the Newcomer Youth Centre. We can’t wait to share what we learn through our growing relationship with the David Suzuki Foundation, and hope this initiative will help advance “Green Settlement” at CultureLink.

CultureLink and the Davenport West Bike Project recognized at Bhayana Family Foundation Awards

The Bhayana Family Foundation Awards recognize the dedication, commitment and skills of staff at United Way member agencies. For the second time, CultureLink has been honoured with an award!

In 2009, CultureLink’s Ajith Aluthwatta won in the “Innovation” category, for forging a partnership between CultureLink and the Toronto Cyclists Union to promote cycling to newcomers. In 2011, the winner in the “Community Partnership” category was the Davenport West Bike Project, in which CultureLink also plays a role.

All the partners – Davenport-Perth Neighbourhood and Community Health Centre, The Stop Community Food Centre, Sweet Pete’s Bike Shop, My First Wheels, Bike Pirates and CultureLink – received plaques at the ceremony held on December 8 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Hundreds of people were there to witness our achievement as a partnership. Thanks to the nominators and the selection panel members, for seeing the multiple benefits of cycling!

Pathways to Green Engagement participants tell their story – digitally!

Need some inspiration? Check out this video produced as part of the Pathways to Green Engagement program, which brought nine youth to CultureLink in the summer and fall. The program introduced environmental organizations and issues, encouraged cycling as an affordable, healthy and convenient form of transportation, and fostered fun and friendship. The youth graduated from the program on December 7, 2011, and released this digital story.
