Founded in April 2016 by a team of passionate staff and volunteer musicians at CultureLInk, a Toronto-based Charity, Nai Syrian Children’s Choir provides a unique space for the refugee children to learn to express their grief, yearning, love and hope through singing in their mother tongue and in the official languages of their new country. While recently arrived Syrian refugee children age 6-12 receive free weekly music education with our musicians, their parents learn and practice English conversation with experienced ESL educators.
To learn more about how the choir was initiated, you may read Healing, Learning and Rejoicing: Origins on the Nai Syrian Children’s Choir.
The Nai Children’s Choir is a place for healing, learning and rejoicing, with its programs focused on the well-being of refugee families. The word Nai means “the sound of the flute” in Arabic. According to Gibran Khalil Gibran, a great poet of the Arabic-speaking world, “singing is a fine prayer and the sound of the flute remains even after life ends” ( Al-Nai) .
The Choir gave its first public performance at CultureLink’s Syrian Project Donor and Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast which earned a standing ovation and many tears of the audience. Since its debut in May 2016, Nai choir continues to impress and inspire the audience and has been invited to sing on many prestigious stages, including Luminato Festival and the 6 Degree Symposium in Toronto.
The Choir rehearses weekly on Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. We accept new choristers on an ongoing basis into our training choir. We welcome all Syrian refugee children who love to sing and are younger than 12 years old. No singing experience is required. Children who demonstrate outstanding singing talent may also be directly admitted into the performing choir. Please contact us at 647 338 5334 for appointments.
We thank Toronto Pearson International Airport for being our founding sponsor and helping finance the choir’s week to week operation. We value our wonderful partnership with Regent Park School of Music which supplies qualified music teachers to the choir and ensures the consistency of the choir’s artistic education. We are also deeply indebted to our very committed volunteers, musicians and ESL tutors, whose work has greatly contributed to the success of the choir.
