Introduction to Green Settlement Initiatives
Around the world, people are increasingly concerned about protecting the environment for future generations. In many countries, people practice sustainable ways of life that are respectful of the earth–gardening, composting, recycling, reusing, walking, and cycling. At CultureLink, we encourage newcomers to retain those sustainable habits and become leaders in the greening of their new home in Canada.
Cycling Program
Cycling is affordable, healthy and convenient–and is also a sustainable transportation option that is good for the environment and creates a more livable city for everyone. In 2008, CultureLink created a partnership with the Toronto Cyclists Union to encourage newcomers to cycle in Toronto. Click here for more information about CultureLink’s cycling program, and here to find out about our partnership with the Toronto Cyclists Union. Taking Green Roots
Newcomer girls have an opportunity to develop their leadership skills and beautify public spaces in Parkdale through this unique program. Over four months, they will meet regularly to learn about healthy lifestyles and environmental stewardship and sustainability. We offer this program in partnership with the City of Toronto Parks Forestry and Recreation’s Diversity Office. To get more information please contact Carolina G’ala at 416-588-6288, ext. 240, or cgala[at]culturelink.ca.
Global Roots Garden
Newcomer youth and seniors from seven different regions of the world garden together at the Wychwood Barns Park. By planting, nurturing, and harvesting traditional food crops and native plants, they share knowledge among generations and cultures. To get involved, please contact Carolina G’ala at 416-588-6288, ext. 240, or cgala[at]culturelink.ca.
