Canada Connects

Moving to a new country is not easy. Many newcomers to Canada find it difficult to speak a different language, adjust to a new culture, and do things in new ways. When family and friends are far away, newcomers often feel lonely. They miss the companionship and support they had back home.

It is fortunate that many Canadians want to meet newcomers and assist them with adjusting to life in Canada.

CultureLink’s Canada Connects is a program that matches established Canadian mentors with newcomers. We work together with our partner, Harbourfront Centre, to facilitate the connections and encourage the supportive friendships that can emerge and are beneficial to everyone involved. Newcomers benefit from practicing their English conversation skills, building social networks, and increasing their sense of belonging in Canada. Through one-on-one and group interactions, they are able to better understand the Canadian way of life. Mentors, on the other hand, get to build on their leadership skills and learn more about different countries. These experiences enhance our diverse community.

Upon completion of the program, participants receive a joint reference letter from both organizations.
