Job Summary:

The Program Worker – Community Spaces (Library Settlement Partnership) works out of community spaces, primarily Toronto Public Library branches, to assist newcomer families and youth with their settlement needs and integration process. As part of the Community Spaces (Library Settlement Partnership), the worker provides needs assessment, development of settlement plans, referrals and follow-up support to clients, and information and orientation group sessions that help newcomers overcome settlement barriers and help the Toronto library system attract newcomers into the library system.

In-person work at one or more community spaces, primarily libraries, will be required. The Program Worker must also be proficient with technology and online tools (for example Zoom, Google Meets, Microsoft Teams), and able to support clients to participate in virtual programs using technology and online tools. Some work on Saturdays and on weekday evenings will be required.

Maintaining positive relationships with library administration and support staff and CultureLink colleagues is essential to program success. All agency staff are also expected to support each other and to collaborate on agency-wide events.

Duties

  • Complete registration of clients and verify their data and particulars to uphold data integrity and validation
  • Provide individual needs assessment and appropriate referrals during client intake process
  • Assist clients to sort out options and develop tailored incremental settlement plans of action while providing necessary support and assistance to advance client settlement goals
  • Refer clients to other social services or assist clients in locating and utilizing community resources including legal, medical and financial assistance, housing, employment, transportation, day care and other services
  • Follow up and meet with clients to assess their progress, give support and discuss any difficulties or problems
  • Work in collaboration, maintain communication, prepare schedules and outreach duties with (respective manager) and Librarians in order to ensure necessary support to all clients as required
  • Prepare promotional material and publicize events through flyers and social media for programs to have enhanced visibility within the community
  • Create partnerships with community stakeholders as appropriate
  • Maintain program statistics. Appropriate and timely input of client details and service details into the OCMS database to report across parameters a strict adherence to ensure deliverables are met
  • Plan and deliver group workshops and other group activities
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Work Capacities

  • Physical demands: sitting at a desk for computer work (50% of the workday) and meetings; lifting (files, laptop, and program supplies up to 5 kg); working in an open office
  • Non-physical demands: travel between worksites; occasional deadlines; variety of tasks
  • Social/emotional demands: teamwork; relationship/network-building; exposure to emotional situations; working closely with the public, with clients and with colleagues

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary program or degree in, a field relevant to human services, or a combination of equivalent experience and education
  • Three years of community and settlement work experience
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English. Additional languages spoken is an asset
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening within the past six months (or availability to do so)

The Community Connections Mentorship Program (CCMP) creates opportunities for newcomers to meet with mentors and partake in a wide range of activities related to employment, civic engagement, arts and culture. The Program Worker recruits, trains, and appreciates volunteers and matches them with newcomers, and engages with the community to support program activities overall.

  • Develop outreach materials, and recruit, screen, train and orient volunteer mentors
  • Organise volunteer appreciation events
  • Match newcomers and volunteer mentors
  • Outreach and partnership building initiatives with businesses, public agencies and institutions to explore strategies to engage volunteer mentors
  • Consult and do needs assessment with newcomer groups to build linkages between newcomers and immigrant serving agencies and the broader community
  • Organize community dialogue sessions that will build knowledge and action supporting a welcoming community for newcomers
  • Review client background information, interview clients to obtain case history and prepare intake reports
  • Assist clients to sort out options and develop plans of action while providing necessary support and assistance and refer them to other social services
  • Meet with clients to assess their progress, give support and discuss any difficulties or problems
  • Coach and assist mentors with establishing a plan of activities; monitor the process and outcome of matches
  • Maintain program statistics using applicable report systems

Job Summary:

CultureLink’s IT Security Bridge Training project assists newcomer professionals with an IT background in finding and
retaining employment, by providing CISSP training, mentoring, networking opportunities, help with resumes and interviews, and insight into the Canadian workplace and job strategies. The Program Worker works in a team to plan, promote, carry out and document program activities.

In-person work at one or more sites will be required, depending on public health conditions. The Program Worker must be proficient with technology and online tools (for example Zoom, Google Meets), and able to support clients to participate using technology and online tools.

Maintaining positive relationships with CultureLink colleagues and external partners is essential to program success. All agency staff are also expected to support each other and to collaborate on agency-wide events.

Duties:

  • Outreach to Internationally-trained IT professionals through presentations, advertising, networks, social media
    and word of mouth.
  • Build effective connections with diverse stakeholders, including Chief Information Officers in the private sector,
    settlement and non-settlement organizations to promote our services and build strategic partnerships.
  • Recruit mentors to work with students on weekly basis and connect them to monthly hackathons or sector
    social events.
  • Provide employment related support such as resume writing, mock interview, and job search strategies, to
    increase clients’ employability.
  • Support clients in finding and retaining meaningful employment through employer connections and ongoing
    support.
  • Organize networking events focusing on employment and mentoring.
  • Prepare and submit reports using different formats as required; design and implement tools to facilitate reporting and overall documenting activities; maintain up-to-date program statistics
  • Other duties as assigned

    Credential recognition, employment opportunities in the field, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) with the ability to build and maintain positive working
    relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Volunteer recruitment, engagement and management is an asset.
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening within the past six month

We offer opportunities to students enrolled in programs related to social services, office administration and education at any of the following post-secondary institutions:

Academy of Learning, Citi College, George Brown College, Guelph University, Humber Polytechnic, Seneca Polytechnic, Sheridan College, Toronto Metropolitan University, University of Toronto, Working Skills Centre, York University.

Students accepted into a placement program will be placed with a staff member to develop a learning plan to fulfil under supervision during the agreed-upon period of placement.
